Active Matrix Display
A type of flat-panel display where each sub-pixel is controlled by one or more transistors. The most common type of active matrix display is based on a technology called TFT (thin film transistor).

Analog Input:
This is the type of input that is most commonly found on monitors where the color information is transmitted from the video card to the monitor as an analog signal.

Aspect Ratio:
The ratio of height to width of the screen of a monitor. Typical aspect ratio for monitors are 4:3 & 5:4. For HDTV the aspec ratio is 16:9.

Backlight:
A lamp, normally made of CCFL (cold cathode flourescent lamp) on the back of flat panel displays that acts as a light source which illuminates the pixels on the screen through a color filter to paint an image. Most flat panels displays have 2 or 4 backlights. More backlight means the screen can achieve a higher brightness.

Bandwidth:
Frequency range at which a monitor can accept and process pixel information. It determines the resolution limits of a monitor. The higher the resolution, the higher the bandwidth needed to display an image without degration.

Blooming:
This is distortion in which focus is diminished as the screen gets brighter.

Brightness Uniformity:
It is the brightness difference across the entire area of the screen.

cd/m2
Unit of measure used to describe the brightness of the screen.

Color Balance:
The ability of the monitor to show and maintain the same color when varying the brightness of the screen.

Color Temperature:
Color temperature affects the overall tone of the image. The commonly supported screen temperatures are 9300K which appears as bluish-white & 6500K which appears as reddish-white.

Contrast Ratio:
The ratio between the brightest & darkest image a monitor can display. Higher contrast ratio is better because it means black appears more black on the screen instead of appearing grey.

Convergence:
The ability of a CRT based monitor's electron beam to hit precisely the correct color dot on the screen.

CRT:
It stands for Cathode Ray Tube. It is the picture tube inside the monitor.

DDC:
It stands for Display Data Channel. It is a standard developed by VESA (Video Electronics Standards Association) to enable the monitor to communicate it's EDID data to it's host system. The EDID data contains parameters that describes the monitor's capability & identity to enable Plug & Play operation.

Degauss:
Removes random color swirls on the screen caused by changes in the Earth's magnetic field.

Digital Input (DVI):
This input is commonly found only on LCD monitors. It is an input that uses digital signals to transmit color & sync information from the video card to the monitor.

Dot Pitch:
It is the distance between two adjacent phosphor dots of similar colors on the screen. The smaller the distance between dots the better the image quality that can be displayed.

Dual Input:
A monitor having both analog & digital (DVI) inputs.

EDID:
It stands for Enhanced Display Identification and it contains basic information about the monitor and it's capabilities. Plug & Play compatible computers can read this information from the monitor for automatic configurations.

Ergonomics:
Features that make the monitor easy to use such as tilt, swivel, height adjustment & non-glare.

Factory Preset Mode:
A set of resolutions that have been pre-configured in the monitor so that they are displayed in the middle of the screen & has the correct size.

FlatFace Monitor:
CRT based monitors that have a flat screen surface for reduced glare & proportional display.

Full Scan:
The ability to show the image on the entire surface of the screen with no unusable black borders on the sides, top & bottom.

High Voltage Regulation:
The ability of the monitor to maintain a stable image size when the brightness of the screen is adjusted up or down.

Horizontal Frequency:
It is measured in Kilohertz (KHz) and it is the rate at which the monitor's electron gun scans one line of pixels across the width of the screen.

Invar Shadow Mask:
A metal alloy that expands minimally when heated. It boosts performance by maintaining good focus at high beam instensities.

Jitter:
Flickering or shaking on a display screen. It can be caused by a wide range of hardware or configurations problems such as bad connection or low refresh rate.

LCD Monitor:
A monitor that uses LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) technology rather than the conventional CRT technology. It's main advantages are low power consumption & small footprint.

Linearity:
The ability of the monitor to display a consistent character size throughout the entire screen area.

Misconvergence:
A distortion caused by the monitor electron beam's inability to hit precisely the correct phosphor dot. The resulting image will have a shadowed apperance.

Moire:
A wavy distortion caused by internal CRT beam interference. The distortion varies depending on screen pattern & brightness.

Persistence:
Phosphos characteristics consisting of the ability to emit light after current of electron beam is removed.

Phosphor:
A chemical compound that emits light when struck by the monitor's electron beams. It glows to create an image on the screen.

Pincushion Distortion:
An inward bowing of the screen at the top, bottom or sides.

Pixel:
Short for Picture Element, a pixel is a single point in a graphic image. Thousands or even millions of pixels are used to display an image on the screen. The pixels are so close together that they appear connected.

Pixel Pitch:
The distance between two similarly colored pixels on the screen. The smaller the distance between pixels the better image quality that can be displayed.

Plug & Play:
The ability to connect a monitor to the computer without having to manually configure the drivers.

Purity:
The ability of the electron beam to hit precisely the correct phosphor color dot. If a full page of red color is shown on the screen

Refresh Rate:
It is measured in Hertz (Hz) and it is also called the vertical frequency. It the rate at which the display on the screen is refreshed or redrawn in one second. 85Hz refresh rate means the display is redrawn 85 times per second. High refresh rate such as 75Hz to 85Hz are needed for flicker free display.

Resolution:
It is measured in pixels. Resolution is the number of pixels per screen. For example, 1024 x 768 means there are 1024 pixels horizontally and 768 pixels vertically. Higher resolution results in sharper image.

Response Time:
The time it takes for an LCD pixel to turn on & off. It is normally measured in milliseconds (ms). The lower the response time, the better the monitor's ability to display moving images or video.

Screen Flicker:
It's a distortion caused by low refresh rate. Flicker is subjective and it's perception varies from person to person.

Shadow Mask:
A thin metal guide punched with tiny holes and carefully aligned with the RGB (red, green, blue) dots to prevent the beam from hitting the wrong color dot.

TFT:
It stands for Thin Film Transistor. It is a type of LCD flat panel screen in which each pixel is controlled one or more transistors. This type of LCD screen offers the best resolution & brightness.

Universal Power Supply:
A type of power supply than can accept a wide range of AC input voltage, normally from 90VAC to 264VAC.

User Programmable Mode:
A set of user programmable memory in the monitor that can store user defined screen adjustment parameters for certain resolutions. This is useful when the monitor is used in different resolutions.

Vertical Frequency:
It is measured in Hertz (Hz). It is the same as refresh rate and is the number of times the screen is refreshed or redrawn in one second.

Viewable Image Size:
VIS for short. It is a diagonal measurement of the actual screen area that can seen and not covered
